I’m OBSESSED with this garden sensory bin we’ve been playing in! 🪴

I got an herb garden for Mother’s Day, so this fit right in with what we’re working on at our house and for spring.

This sensory bin was so easy to put together and is probably my favorite so far. 🤍

We scoop the beans (soil), into the planters, add some seeds (coffee beans), “water” them with our bottle, and watch the seeds sprout into plants (Pom poms)! 😍

I’ve started adding words to our sensory bins so we can connect sounds to letters to words. 🥰

I’m starting a new segment called “What I Got Wrong About”

This idea came to be because I found myself seeing seemingly endless posts about what not to do, do this instead of this, and really just a lot of posts about what we do wrong as caregivers. 😬

Even though this information is so useful and true, sometimes it feels as though everyone is doing everything right except for us. 💔

It made me wonder if being transparent about my shortcomings as a caregiver would be a better approach for helping other caregivers (like myself) feel validated and understood.

So, my first round in this segment is sharing what I did wrong when I began using time-in as an approach to discipline.

Why does following through with a consequence some

Why does following through with a consequence sometimes make me feel like a superhero? 🦸🏻‍♀️

And as soon as I say a consequence I’m not okay with, I feel like 😑 and have to take it back.

One of my top rules for discipline is say what you mean and mean what you say. ✅

These kids are no joke, and so smart. They know exactly when to call our bluff. 😂

So, if you don’t intend on following through with a consequence, just don’t say it. 😂 Take some time to think about a logical consequence you’ll be okay following through on.

My most recent consequence I’m following through on is having our toddler take a day or two break from her magnetic tiles when she’s having trouble taking care of them.

Point being, offer logical consequences that you’ll 100% do when a behavior hasn’t changed. 🤍

Every day is a good day for dramatic play. 😍

Dramatic play, or pretend play, is a wonderful option for quality time with children and for children to play with others.

Kids learn to interact with their environment when they pretend play. They act out scenarios they may see us in often (like me at the coffee shop all the time 🙃).

Along with helping build social skills, dramatic play is great with supporting early literacy and math skills (think reading a menu and paying).

In our house, we love our coffee shop dramatic play! 😍 We take turns as the barista and customer and make sure to order everything off the menu. 😏

With this dramatic play set we have:

☕️ Open/closed signs
☕️ Business hours
☕️ Pick up area sign
☕️ Drink menu/order form
☕️ Food menu/order form
☕️ Coffee shop labels
☕️ Coffee shop words booklet
☕️ Loyalty punch cards

Make a Valentine’s Day sensory bin with me! 💝

I got all the filling for this bin at Walmart. Those heart containers are SO cute and I’m going to be using them a lot for my Valentine’s Day sensory bins. 😍

We are excited for Valentine’s Day over here! 😍

I’m prepped with Valentine’s Day activities galore! 💘

We’ll be working on:

💝 counting
💝 letters
💝 colors
💝 vocabulary
💝 tracing
💝 fine motor
💝 puzzles
💝 tic-tac-toe
💝 crafts

All with a Valentine’s Day theme.

Oh my gosh. We are saying this allll the time in our house lately. 🫠

Usually it goes like, “It’s okay to be angry. It’s not okay to hit.” 🙃

We have a toddler, so her go-to is hitting, which is developmentally appropriate.

It’s our job as caregivers to validate the feelings that she has, while also setting the boundary for acceptable behavior.

After I know she’s listening and taking in the direction, I explain that I noticed whatever happened may have made her feel a certain way (naming the feeling). Then, I say this quote.

The idea is that the emotion is accepted; the response needs to be altered. 🤍

In turn, our daughter learns that her feelings are welcomed and validated. She also learns appropriate self-management skills that she can carry throughout her life. ☺️

*Note - I offer her calm down kit as an option when she has those big feelings.
